We quietly launched our fall/winter merch this week and we could not be more thrilled with the way it turned out. I hesitated to carry
new merch for years.
I wanted ethically made but I found the quality often lacked in an effort to keep garments affordable. In the end I decided to go for a fair trade, HIGH QUALITY heavy duty set that will last for years. I agonized over the price for quite some time, feeling guilty about the price while barely charging enough to cover the cost…In the end I had to have a stern talk with myself.
Clothing is hard to make ethically. It is a costly multi step process that involves many hours of labor and expertise. If I’m going to preach against fast fashion hauls, our new clothing has to reflect the REAL cost of garments. Never before in history has clothing been so cheaply mass produced and so wasteful. Mountains of discarded fashion fills less wealthy corners of the planet and that is partly because of unrealistic prices, and unfair exploitative practices in the fashion industry. By paying (and then charging) a REAL fair price for quality garments, we say YES to slow ethical consumption and NO to fast fashion and throw away culture. Sometimes I still doubt my decision on this because our sweats don’t FLY off the shelf like hot cakes. But then I remind myself THAT’S THE POINT!! Fast fashion is main stream because businesses prioritized
profit over people and cut corners on quality
so they could sell billions of sweatshirts for low prices and rake in the cash. Our sets may never fly and I don’t want them to. I want people to purchase them mindfully. I want people to appreciate what it took to make them and be able to wear them for years to come. That sort of thing doesn’t come cheap and it doesn’t come in every color. All this to say, I love EVERYTHING about our new merch, including the price. And while these sets may never line my pockets with excess cash, I can rest easy knowing that every time we sell one our bills our paid, the person purchasing understands the price, and the people behind the product were treated fairly for their craft. And in the end, people spend $$$ on poorly made name brand clothing every day so WHY as a tiny business with bills to pay would I EVER worry about my prices that are STILL wildly cheaper than the big guys.
🤣
