There comes a moment for some of us when we look around the house and think..." wow, there's a lot of plastic in here". It's in our closets, it's wrapped around our food, it's holding our cleaning supplies, filling cabinets and once you start looking, it's easy to feel like plastic is EVERYWHERE.

So you start researching plastic free products and realize there are a lot of options and then you wonder which ones are the best options then you go down a rabbit hole of reviews and articles and end up freaked out because you just learned what greenwashing is and you ALSO just learned that microplastics exist and and and!

BREATH. We got you. At Marilla's our goal is to create a place where you can come in looking for plastic free options and leave knowing the products are tested, truly good quality and the ripple effect of your purchase is as positive as it is plastic free. No greenwashing, no climate guilt, just practical solutions that real people use every day.

Today I'm going to round six products I think everyone should grab if they are trying to reduce plastic. These products are some of my favorites and some of the most accessible options we have in the shop!

1. Bamboo Toothbrush : I know I know old news but if you're just STARTING start with something EASY! My favorites are the compostable natural bristle brush and the Huppy Soft bristles

2. Hand Soap: check your bathrooms and if you're low on soap, grab a bar of soap and a bamboo soap dish. This LOOKS fantastic, is super affordable and erases the plastic from your handwash routine! If you already have a pump you love but you've been buying hand soap refills in plastic, bring your pump in to Marilla's and refill it with our Soap & Suds hand soap. This soap is made in small batches by the team at Fillaree so every refill supports TWO woman owned businesses reducing waste in the world!

3. Herbs & Spices: take a peek at your spices. Pull anything in a plastic bottle and give it a sniff. Actually, give them all a sniff. The problem with plastic spice bottles is they don't actually seal your spices all that well so the flavor and potency is lost much quicker aka wasting you money. For any spices that have lost their punch, bring some glass jars to refill at Marilla's for a FRACTION of the cost. If you have your own jars we love to see them, but if you need some you can buy new HERE or browse our free jar shelf for the perfect shape and size. Boom. Bybye plastic packaged spices, hello tasty food and saving money!

4. Deodorant Cream: Ok I know natural deodorant gets a bad rap and that's probably because I spend a lot of time talking about how much I don't like it. HOWEVER on my search for plastic free pits I found Little Seed Farm and they turned me into a believer. I can't believe I'm saying it but this stuff works like a CHARM with NO aluminum, baking soda, OR plastic packaging!

5. Beeswax Wraps & Silicone Food Covers: On the topic of wrapping food, lately i've been trying to reduce the amount of plastic touching what I eat so these beeswax have come in handy! They can mold to any shape, stick to bowls like plastic wrap, and even keep bread fresh! The silicone food covers come in a variety of sizes so if you can't find the lid for your dish, HAVE NO FEAR!

So there you have it folks, with just 5 simple switches you've reduced the amount of plastic you come in contact with on a daily basis. Do I have more suggestions? Of course!! Come visit! Let's talk! But most importantly, remember to take baby steps, take one thing at a time (literally look around your house and see what you're running out of and replace things slowly)  and remember that small changes DO matter and you are making a difference every time you choose to try a new swap! A difference for the planet, a difference for the businesses you belive in, and most importantly, a difference for YOU!

Talk soon,

Marilla
